What would Leonardo...

Dear 7th grade GATE students,

On our webquest there are some examples of these "what if..." questions. You need to type on paper a response to one of the example questions and turn it in to me since you won't have access to respond online.

After you've done that, come back here and think of a question related to the idea of wondering what Leonardo might be doing if he were alive today.  Post your question here by using the Comments section at the bottom of this Blog.

Then read through other people's questions and respond thoughtfully to at least three of them.

  1. How would Leonardo Da Vinci react if he found out that most of his discoveries and inventions actually work/are true?

    1. I think Leonardo would not be shocked at the fact that his inventions work because he would have thought they would work.

      Delete
    2. Leonardo would react with surprise and disbelief. Most of his inventions were "insignificant" and they "didn't work". If he found out that some of his inventions worked, he would be very happy with himself.

      Delete
    3. He would probably be surprised, but not in disbelief because many of his inventions that seemed unrealistic at the time were, in fact, proven to work.

      Delete
    4. Leonardo designed them in a way for them to work, even though he made a couple errors in some of his inventions, I think he would be surprised that his inventions are still known today.

      Delete
    5. I believe that Leonardo would not be shocked, but he would still acknowledge the fact that they were his ideas and he should get all the credit.

      Delete
    6. I think Leonardo wouldn't be that surprised and maybe even be like "I told you so." It would probably feel good to know that you were right all along when you had so many people doubting you.

    7. I believe that Leonardo da Vicni would be in complete awe. When you want do something that everyone tells you will never happen, you lose hope. The thought becomes only a silly little fantasy. For Leonardo to see his sketches come to life and actually be in front of him, I think it would be an incredible moment.

    8. Leonardo did in detail sketches doing hours of research not just doodling a thing he thought might fly, so i believe Leonardo would not that shocked just proud he was right.

      Delete
    9. Leonardo probably wouldn't be shocked, because he didn't just make up his discoveries, he went out and saw them for himself. For example, he dissected dead bodies and saw what was really inside, so he knew it was true. He just studied exactly what he saw.

  3. If we gave Leonardo a Commercial jet from today, What would he do to it?

    ReplyDelete

    1. If Leonardo was given a Commercial Jet, in today's use, he would probably take it apart, learn the mechanics, and use his knowledge to fly the Jet, and also use his knewly-found intelligence to build something new, but of the same sort.

      Delete
    2. Tristin spelled newly wrong.

      Delete
    3. He would probably be one of those people who have to take apart everything and analyze it top to bottom.

      Delete
    4. If Leo was given a Commercial jet, he would learn how it was built, and how to fly it. He would then travel around the world, stopping from time to time to learn about the flora and fauna of the new region he has landed in. He might paint some landscapes at his stops.

    5. he would crash it and build a better one.

  4. If Leonardo da Vinci were alive today, what career path would he be on? How might all of the new jobs and materials we have today affect his job choice?

    1. It would be interesting to see what Leonardo would do as a chemist

      Delete
    2. I bet that he would have participated in a bunch of career paths: finance, invention, flight, security.

  5. Based on Leonardo's lifestyle and beliefs, who do you think he would vote for in the 2016 US presidential election?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leonardo would have probably been running for president given the chance.

      Delete
    2. He would probably be voting at all, considering that he doesn't live in America, and probably wouldn't care if we made America great again.

      Delete
    3. Well, as shown in one of the books given to us by Mrs.Wurm to read, Leonardo was very Misogynistic. (that means he had a distaste or did not appreciate women) Most likely he would vote for Trump because of his opinion on women.

      Delete
    4. Neither. He would say "Screw America! I'm going home!" and he would then move back to Vinci.

      Delete
    5. That sounds about right.

  6. Leonardo sketched some inventions in his notebook. Some were for the military.

If Leo were here today, how would he react to today's military weapons and vehicles?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He would probably be amazed that we have created an effective machine gun

      Delete
    2. I think that Leonardo would find new war things interesting, but I don't think he would really like them because he was against war.

      Delete
    3. Leo might be startled by the complications of some of them, but find them interesting as well. He might even create the weapon in a better form, to one up the original creator. Overall, he would want to compete with the creator.

      Delete
    4. Leonardo was against war, so I think that he would not be happily surprised that we (as in the U.S. and other countries) have created weapons for mass destruction and death.

      Delete
    5. Leonardo might have fear the thought of atomic bombs which can destroy countries and ruin the land forever.

      Delete
    6. he would laugh and create a weapon more powerful than ever before created.

  7. You are being pressure by peers and you don't want to (tight-rope walking), but you feel you have to; you ask yourself, what would Leonardo do?

    1. Leonardo would probably just create a makeshift zip-line

      Delete
    2. I think he would be smart enough to know what to do.

      Delete
    3. In my opinion leonardo would ask himself,"what would Max Hardcastle do?", and it would be a perpetual loop of unanswered question.

      Delete
  8. Leonardo liked to build off of ideas.
How do you think Leonardo would try to modify modern-day inventions like planes or computers?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leonardo would most likely modify computers in a different way to make them in some way faster and easier to use, but somehow make it to where he can personalize his own and make his own computer if he had the time and the chance. Odds are he would keep the computer to himself so that other people wouldn't know about it or recreate it. This would probably found a couple decades after his death. He, after all, is known to leave things behind ahead of his time, so this makes me think that he would have some way to make it possibly to use your body in the computer to navigate or move in a game compactly without taking up much space, such as using your arms in a video game to interact with in-game items. Although it would be ground-breaking to have something so complex but so compact, he would probably still have built it with a couple flaws and errors like many of his genius but in a sense unstable works of inventions.

    3. I think we would have way more advanced technology.

      Delete
    4. You see Sam's complex answer, and then you see Christian's. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Delete
    5. Yes, definitely. He probably would have invented a spin-off computer like a phone, or apple watch, but probably not as useless as an apple watch.

      Delete
  9. With the technology we have today, what do you think he would invent?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He'd probably invent something that worked digitally, because he didn't have that sort of thing in his time.

      Delete
    2. He probably wouldn't invent anything at all. He'd hunt down and victimize the creator of the helicopter for stealing his idea.

      Delete
    3. Leonardo loved inventions that moved so he would probably work on cars or other vehicles to make them better.

      Delete
    4. Leonardo invented many military weapons in his time. I think that he would like to invent better weapons and tanks to help his country. He may also be interested in the modern technology and improving it. Whatever it is he may invent it would probably be based on another invention that has already been built in the current world.

  10. If Leonardo had a twin brother that was also interested in art, would they work together or have a rivalry? Tell why.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Odds are, there would be a rivalry going on. First of all, having a twin is all fun and games until you get to school, where you automatically start competing with the other. Most people believe that they would love to have a twin, but they don't and it's really aggravating. Most sets of twins compete anyway, and if both of their works of art would be worth millions, then there would be a great rivalry, maybe even to the point that they forget that they are brothers. Everyone wants money, right? In some peoples eyes more money is equal to more happiness and more fame. This is where the competition would set it.

      Delete
    2. I think that if Leonardo had a twin brother that was also interested in art, they would be each others rivals at first, but maybe in the future work together. Depending on how good at art Leonardo's twin brother would be, people could possible pay a lot of money to have a piece of art painted by "The Vinci Brothers". I think the brothers would come to realize that when they work together, the profit could be much better.

  11. what job would Leonardo if he were still alive? an aerospace engineer or a painter?

    ReplyDelete

    1. He would probably be an aerospace engineer because painters aren't very much needed anymore.

      Delete
    2. modern art section in the art museum

      Delete
    3. I think Leonardo would find time to do both. If he enjoys painting, he would do that in the time he has aside from being an aerospace engineer.

    4. He would build a rocket a paint the moana lisa on the side of the rocket.

  12. would Leonardo save all of his work on a computer where it is accessible or on a where it can't be corrupted and is safer

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Probably not because he would be smarter enough to save things on a computers, because this art can be digitally stolen because hacking is a big problem today.

      Delete
    2. He would not save it on a computer because there is a way for people to access that and they would be inclined to because, well he is Leonardo da Vinci, and he liked to keep to himself, probably a fear of his work being stolen

      Delete
    3. yes but then he has to plug it in and unplug it and download and upload the things every time he wants to do a simple sketch which would probably take more time then the sketch

      Delete
    4. I think he would not save his work on a computer. He was a very secretive man and did not want his work copied or stolen. Leonardo would probably just keep a paper copy of his work so he would know for sure that it was safe.

  13. if Leonardo had all the knowledge of today but none of the technology or tools would he spend all day theorizing or would he try and build our modern day tools to build more technology

    ReplyDelete

    1. Leonardo would probably build what he needed for his works (paintbrush, pencil, paper) and get to work theorizing and probably performing experiments, making what he needed along the way.

  14. If Leonardo was still alive, where do you think he would live?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In Vinci, considering that this is where he lived as a child. The name "Leonardo Da Vinci" after all, means Leonardo of Vinci.

      Delete
    2. If you are asking where in America he would live (like what state) I would think somewhere with less factories or houses. Leonardo would like to draw the landscape since many artists in his time have never done that, and it would provide him with more nature to draw. Here he would also have more room to invent and build things. Of course he wouldn't be able to be left alone if other Americans knew he was alive.

  15. If Leonardo had to choose between studying science or art of the modern world, which would he choose and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Science because Leo would be interested about the technology we recently designed and probably try to advance the ideas/inventions.

      Delete
    2. I believe that if Leonardo da Vinci had to choose between studying science or art in the modern world, that he would study science. There have been thousands of scientific discoveries that people didn't know about in his time. I think he would love to learn everything there is to know about science now.

      Delete
    3. I believe that Leonardo would study science because science has come a very long way since his time. So has art, but the things we can do with science today are incredible. He would be amazed at our technology and knowledge of the cosmos. He would also probably be fascinated by eyeglasses, because he was interested in light and optics. Leonardo da Vinci would love our modern day science.

      Delete
    4. Leo would probably study science as he created more inventions than he did art. So, he would want to find out what inventions he made are still, in use or if they were ever used.

      Delete
  16. If Leonardo da Vinci was still living in 2016, would he still be creating inventions and painting more works, or would he give up on the artist role and work at a modern day, big city job.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leonardo would likely continue his art, science, and inventing career because those are his passions and what he enjoys. Either way, he would probably get funding from multiple companies.

      Delete
    2. I would find it hard to believe that Leonardo would do well in a big city position. Considering that he wasn't very disciplined, he would probably irritate those working around him greatly. It would be very stressful for him because he would have to get his work done on time. Because of this, I would expect that Leonardo would enjoy painting and inventing more than an office job. He would be able to work on his own time and be as creative as possible.

  17. If Leonardo da Vinci was born during modern time would he be as famous/important as he was during the Renaissance?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, he would not be as important because of all the technology. The technology would have kept him from doing actually paintings. He would most likely use editing soft wares on a PC.

      Delete
    2. I think that if Leonardo was born during modern times he would be as important as he was during the Renaissance period. He invented things that were hundreds of years ahead of his time when he was alive, so who's to say he wouldn't invent something that will be used hundreds of years after our deaths?

      Delete
    3. If Leonardo was born in modern times he would be more important as the only true reason he is remembered is his art, but in modern times he would have done more working inventions.

  18. If Leonardo were to be alive today, where would he live and what house would he live in?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leonardo would probably live in the countryside of Italy in a large barn-type house with plenty of room for his studies. The landscape would provide him with a good muse for his paintings.

      Delete
    2. Leo would probably live in a house in a rural area away from the city and other people. He could sit out in the nature and paint. His house would probably be small and have lots of windows to see the outdoors.

      Delete
    3. da Vinci would live in a country-side town home with plenty of windows to see the landscape located in Italy. He would rather live in a house with plenty of windows and far away from people, so no one would bother him and he would be able to paint more freely.

      Delete
  19. What kind of architectural inventions would Leonardo invent if he were alive today? Which problems might his inventions solve?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If he were alive today, he might invent a growing building that uses the growth of trees. That would help solve our resources issue and be constantly providing more space, so no new buildings are needed.

      Delete
  20. If Leonardo had been brought up in a modern city with all the distractions of technology instead of on a farm, would he still be interested in nature and science, or would he study modern technology like computers?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leonardo would most likely be more into the technology. He would use technology, because it would help him by making projects easier to finish and he could easily photoshop if he needed to. Plus he would be into the 3D printers.

      Delete
    2. I think Leonardo would most likely be very interested in computers and technology and ways to improve them. However, I believe that due to his curious nature, he would also be very interested in nature and science. He would use his knowledge about technology and resources to invent ways to use spaces within the city to grow plants and/or food. He might even genetically alter a plant to make it more adaptable to the city.

      Delete
    3. I think da Vinci would be interested in technology and how to improve it. I think he would probably create something knew based on our modern phones, tablets, and computers. Maybe he would invent an affordable watch that projected holograms into the air! This would be so amazing! I think he also would be interested with taking apart modern technology to see how they work. Just like he dissected dead bodies to study anatomy.

      Delete
    4. I think he would have done a little bit of everything, much as he did back in the 1400's. He probably would have taken computers for granted, like we do.

    1. Leonardo probably would be interested in sports. I don't think he would play a sport, but he might invent something crazy like a multiple story soccer playing field, or make a better kickball.

  22. Do you think Leonardo would have used a computer often, or would he have neglected it? Would he have invented is own computer?
